How to Design a Functional Garage Space

Are you one of those individuals who is always trying to find an item in your garage, only to be unsuccessful? Do you find yourself tripping over garden tools and boxes filled with mysterious items whenever you try to walk through your garage? If this sounds like your experience, it’s time to do some spring cleaning and organize your garage area so it can become a useful part of your home rather than a nuisance or in some cases, a real safety hazard. In this post, we will outline some tips and tricks on how to organize your garage space, once and for all.

Consider Purpose

Take a few minutes to think about what you actually want to use your garage for. Perhaps you simply want to have enough room in which to park your vehicles and nothing more.  Others want to use their garage to store garden and/or snow removal equipment. Some people want to use their garage to work on hobbies such as motorcycle repair, woodworking or other small projects around the home. Whatever you want to use your garage for, if there are items currently in your garage that don’t fit your vision, then you need to find another place for them. Have a garage sale to get rid of unwanted items or buy a small garden shed in which to store your snow removal and garden equipment. Consider storing items you want to keep in your attic or somewhere else in the house.

A Place for Everything and Everything in its Place

It might be tempting to simply leave things strewn on a counter or on the floor so you can find it quickly the next time you want to use it, but it doesn’t take long before your garage space can become quite cluttered. Invest in some cupboards made especially for garage areas and put things away when you are done using them. Take a few minutes to organize all your various screws, nails, and other paraphernalia into small containers or jars. It might take a bit of time upfront to organize everything but once you do, your garage will look cleaner and you will be able to find things more easily.

Look Up for More Storage Space

If you find yourself still looking for additional storage space, considering hanging items from the ceiling. Bikes can be stored during the winter months by using specially designed brackets mounted on the ceiling, giving you more garage space. In addition, check out your local hardware store or garage door installation service to see if they offer storage units that can be mounted on your garage ceiling as well.
