Dealing with Garage Door Rust

Many garage owners choose the strength and stability of a steel garage door. They prefer it over wood because it is less likely to warp and will stand up better for every event. However, there is one issue with metal doors, and that is that they can rust. As the exterior of your garage door is exposed to moisture and the elements, rust is inevitable, especially if the door is not correctly cared for. Below are some ways you can get rid of and prevent rust from happening.

Removing Garage Door Rust

Preventing garage door rust can be relatively easy. The best option is to give your door a coating of rust-resistant paint for protection every few years. However, if rust is already manifesting, you can’t just paint over it. For one, painted-over rust could look more pretty. Second, painted-over rust is still damaged rust.

If rust is caught early, you can scrub it away with regular door washing or just a bit of white vinegar. However, for more profound areas of rust, it will require sanding. A combination of sanding and cleaning the metal will remove the rust. The site should be patched if uneven from the rest of the door, primed, and painted with rust-resistant paint.

In most cases, this is a job you can easily do yourself. However, if you have a door that has many rust stains, and several of them are very deep, you should contact a garage door repair technician. They can advise you on how or if it is even worth tackling. If the door is too severely damaged by rust, trying to remove it will compromise the integrity of the door itself. Rust is bad. Holes in your garage door are worse.
