Another advantage is that these dock levelers will operate in the event of a power outage in or at the facility, as they operate by releasing a hold down mechanism inside the leveler by physically pulling an external ring that connects to a chain. After the chain is pulled the leveler lifts upwards and the lip releases and rotates approximately 90 degrees. After this the leveler must be physically pushed down using the body weight of the operator which allows lip to rest on top of the trailer floor. When the transfer of goods and material is complete the chain is again pulled thereby releasing the mechanism, raising the dock and retracting the lip. The attendant will then walk down the dock into the stored position. Safety considerations for mechanical loading dock levelers are minimal but notable. It is important to consider full range toe guards as an option as they completely seal off the exposed area of a loading dock leveler when it is in a raised area eliminating the pinch point which can cause serious injury. Mechanical safety legs are the other safety feature found on this type of equipment. These safety legs mechanically stop the leveler from falling below level thereby eliminating another safety concern with mechanical loading dock levelers.
