How to Deal with Garage Door Rust
For many garage owners, they choose the strength and stability of a steel garage door. They choose it over wood because it is less likely to warp and will stand up better for every event. However, there is one issue with metal doors, and that is that they can rust. As the exterior of your garage door is exposed to moisture and the elements, rust is an eventuality. Certainly, if the door is not given proper care. Below are some ways you can get rid of and prevent garage door rust from happening.
Removing Garage Door Rust
Preventing garage door rust can be relatively easy. The best option is to give your door a coating of rust-resistant paint for protection every few years. However, if rust is already manifesting, you can’t just paint over it. For one, rust that has been painted over doesn’t look particularly pretty. Second, rust that has been painted over is still damage.
If rust is caught early, you can usually simply scrub it away with regular door washing or just a bit of white vinegar. However, for deeper areas of rust, it will require sanding. A combination of sanding and cleaning the metal will remove the rust. The area should then be patched if uneven from the rest of the door, primed, and painted over with rust-resistant paint.
In most cases, this is a job that you can easily do yourself. However, if you have a door that has many rust stains, and several of them very deep, you may want to contact a garage door repair technician. They can advise you on how to tackle it or if it is even worth tackling. If the door is too badly damaged by rust, trying to remove it will compromise the integrity of the door itself. Rust is bad. Holes in your garage door are worse.
