Restraints are a critical piece of kit that when specified and installed properly help prevent injuries and damage at the loading dock site. These systems prevent premature trailer departure and restrict trailer movement to ensure the dock leveler lip remains on the floor of the trailer. Face mount style trailer restraints are the most commonly used type of restraints on the market today. The face mount restraints work by holding back the ICC bar on the trailer which prevents forward movement. As with all loading dock equipment selecting the proper restraint system is critical. Since trailer restraints are located outside of the building they are subjected to extreme weather and temperatures so choosing the correct model will greatly reduce maintenance, service and repair. Depending on the model chosen trailer restraints are operated by moving a electric/mechanical or electric/hydraulic controlled restraint arm. There are also mechanical operated restraints that are operated by a dock attendant who uses a bar to engage and disengage the device. Manual wheel chocks are another way to restrain a trailer at the dock door. Although wheel chocks are the oldest and most inexpensive trailer restraint option, they do offer some drawbacks. Because the dock attendant is responsible for positioning and removing them they are easily overlooked which can create a serious safety concern.
